Moving day is hectic, but the first week in your new place sets the tone. Get these 5 things sorted early and you’ll feel settled way faster.
1. Do a walk-through + take photos
Before you unpack a single box, check every room. Look for scratches, marks, leaks, and how appliances work. Take dated photos and send them to your landlord/agent.
It protects your deposit later and avoids “it was already like that” conversations.
2. Sort the essentials: bills, internet, and keys
Get your name on electricity, gas, water, council tax, and broadband ASAP. Delays here mean no WiFi and surprise bills.
Also test all keys, fobs, and window locks. If anything’s missing or doesn’t work, report it on day 1.
3. Find the important bits Locate the fuse box, water stopcock, boiler, and smoke/carbon monoxide alarms.
Knowing where they are saves you panic if something trips or leaks at 11pm. While you’re at it, test the alarms.
4. Meet the neighbours + learn the area A quick hello goes a long way. Ask about bin days, parking, and any building quirks. Then do a 10-minute walk: nearest shop, bus stop, takeaway, and green space. Feeling at home is about knowing where things are.
5. Make it feel like yours You don’t need to decorate everything on day 1. Start with bed, lighting, and one cosy corner. Add plants, art, or photos once the boxes are gone.
